The world's first and
only fat-free pizza was invented in 1991 by Steve Neid, a high school
teacher in
Akron,
Ohio. A one-time professional soccer player and a lifelong fitness
enthusiast, Steve paid close attention to his diet for maximum athletic
performance.
Steve
loved pizza, and set out to create a healthy pizza. Recognizing it was and
is America’s favorite junk food he took the junk out, creating the first
pizza that had zero grams of fat, was sugar free and contained no
cholesterol. The new pizza drew national attention and was featured in USA
Today, Newsweek and Men’s Health Magazine.
Initially Steve had the new pizza made to
spec by third party producers and distributed through grocery store chains,
but cost and quality control issues moved him in 1994 to manufacture Pizza
Fit’n Free in a dedicated wholly-owned facility.
Fully committed to his revolutionary product,
Steve began searching for alternative methods of distributing and marketing
his product. In 1998, Pizza Fit’n Free took advantage of the Internet
evolution and a website was created to serve customers nationwide. In 2010 a
second facility in
Ferndale, Washington was added to better serve customers in the Western
states.
Pizza
Fit’n Free has steadily gained further national and international exposure.
The Calorie King Book, Muscle Magazine, Your Diet Magazine, and The Price Is
Right continued to create demand. In 2006, Pizza Free
opened its first franchise in
South Africa.
In
January 2011 Pizza Fit'n Free premiered on QVC Television, and "Pizza Steve"
has since made regular appearances on live TV to bring his little pizza to
the national spotlight.
